An Italian bank, is claiming a move from Sun Solaris to Red Hat Enterprise Linux will produce savings of 50% in hardware and software costs. All 8,000 Unix workstations ate BPU Banca, are to be migrated to Red Hat Desktop. Sun hardware is also to be replaced with standardised Intel PCs. PCs, following the migration will be enable with dual-boot mode. Support of both Linux and Microsoft operating systems will then be possible, without additional cost. BPU Banca, parent of Banche Popolari Unite banking group, gains vendor independence in both software and hardware. In the future the bank says it will have greater flexibility in implementing infrastructure solutions to comply with best practice and industry trends. The migration is due to finish by the end of the year. Consultancy , Red Hat Network is advising the bank. Included is asset management, security management, maintenance of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux system. |
